Jamón or paleta: How to choose

Jamón is made from the pig’s hind leg; paleta comes from the foreleg. This is the distinction in Spain’s Royal Decree 4/2014. Paleta, often described in English as cured shoulder, is a different cut. Read the complete product designation when comparing two Ibérico options.

Start with the occasion and your routine

Consider whether you want to carve at home, open a pack occasionally or give a present. The right format should suit the person who will use it, as well as the occasion.

  • For carving at home: Check the dimensions, available space and whether you have the stand, utensils and skills to handle the piece safely.
  • For separate occasions: Individually packed portions may suit your plans. Work out how many packs you will use each time rather than opening the whole selection.
  • For a gift: Ask which format the recipient prefers. Enjoying Ibérico does not necessarily mean wanting to carve a whole piece.

Four things to check on the product page

A practical comparison
QuestionWhat to look for
Which cut is it?Jamón or paleta, followed by the feeding category and Iberian breed percentage.
What will arrive?A bone-in piece, boneless piece, portion or sliced pack, where offered.
How much am I buying? The weight range or net weight, number of units and exact pack contents.
How will I store it?The producer’s storage instructions, including what changes after opening.

Whole-piece price and sliced-pack price are different comparisons

The weight of a bone-in piece includes parts that will not be served as slices. A sliced pack states its net contents. Dividing a whole-piece price by its weight therefore does not establish the cost of the same amount ready to eat.

For equivalent sliced packs, compare the price for the same net quantity alongside the product designation and cutting format. Avoid assuming one fixed edible yield for every whole piece: The reference and its preparation matter.

Is one always better?

That rule does not make the decision for you. Compare clearly identified products, then consider your preferences. Paleta is not automatically a lower category, and the word Ibérico alone does not replace information about feeding and breed.

A short checklist before choosing

  1. Decide between carving a piece and using a prepared format.
  2. Read the designation and details for that particular reference.
  3. Compare equivalent amounts and the complete cost, including delivery.
  4. Check storage and delivery conditions before confirming.

The shop’s commercial selection is being prepared. Availability, weight ranges and prices will appear once validated. This guide does not certify every product as belonging to one category or protected designation of origin. The initial delivery area is mainland Spain; an English page does not imply international delivery.
